Lila B. Downey February 10, 1949- July 22, 2025
On July 22,2025 God reached down his hand and took a beautiful flower, our beloved Lila B. Downey, who entered peacefully into eternal rest at the age of 76 years old surrounded bye her family. Lila was born on February 10, 1949 to the late Robert (Bud)and Ada B. Downey, and was the cherished of 9 children as the oldest daughter in a family filled with love and devotion. She accepted Christ at the age of 12 years old and joined the Pleasant View Baptist Church.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched with her kindness and unwavering faith. Lila was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings William Larry Downey and Shirley Ann Downey, her loving husband, Freddie G. Munday, and her daughter, Jennifer Joyce. She was united in marriage to Freddie on February 11, 1967, a union blessed with four children: Sherry Lynn, Jennifer Joyce, Donna Carol, and William Kelly Munday. As a graduate of the Franklin Simpson High School class of 1967, Lila’s roots in this community ran deep. She joined Macedonia Baptist Church, where she faithfully served. Her devotion to God and her church was evident in the many ways she gave of herself—serving on the Usher Board for over 30 years, teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, and as a member of the Mother Board. Her faithfulness to her family was an example of love, service, and dedication to others. Lila worked for 29 years at Auburn Hosiery Mill, a place where she formed lifelong friendships, and later at Walmart for 17 years, where her warmth, compassion, and caring nature brightened the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing her. She was a woman who always put others first and made everyone feel welcome and valued, whether at work, at church, or in the community.
The joy and love Lila shared with her family was boundless. She adored her children and grandchildren, and spent countless hours cherishing her time with them. Lila was the loving mother of Sherry Lynn (Corey) Greene, Donna Carol (Jermaine) Lockhart, and William Kelly (Amy) Munday. She also opened her heart to Rodney Faulkner, whom she embraced as a son of her own. She leaves behind six grandchildren: Audarshia and Cambria Faulkner, Peyton Carver, Jermani and Denali Lockhart, Jessiah Savage, and four step-grandchildren: Laron, Avery, Taiya, and Noah. She was also blessed with one great-granddaughter and two great-grandsons, and 9 step-grandchildren Lila was a proud sister to Linda Atkins and Alene Downey, and a devoted sibling to her brothers Clinton, Jerry, Hazel, and Nathaniel Downey. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and sister-in-laws, all of whom were touched by her grace and warmth. One of her most cherished friendships was with her lifelong friend, Ora Lee Offutt. Although her health began to decline in her later years, Lila remained a beacon of light to all who knew her. She will be remembered not only for her nurturing and loving spirit, but for her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, her dedication to her family, and her servant’s heart that touched everyone she met. Lila’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
She leaves behind a family and community forever grateful for her presence in their lives. Her memory will be cherished by her children, grandchildren, siblings, and all who knew her as a faithful servant, loving mother, and a dear friend. Rest in peace Momma… You were loved beyond measure, and you will be missed by all who were privileged enough to know you.
